OBESITY

Obesity is chronic disease that is defined as an excessively high amount of body fat in relation to lean body mass, subsequently caused by caloric intake that exceeds energy expenditure. 


There are several factors that can influence obesity such as:
 

  • Hormonal and Metabolism factors

  • Genetics
  • Psychological factors

  • Caloric intake

  • Caloric expenditure

Health Risks Associated with Obesity

  • Increased risk of premature death

  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus

  • High blood pressure

  • Heart and vascular disease

  • Kidney disease

  • Reflux disease

  • Breathing difficulties such as asthma and sleep apnoea

  • Depression and stress

  • Breast, colon and uterine cancers

    Not only does obesity impact on biological factors but it can severely affect someones psychological factors such as:

     

  • Negative self image
  • Discrimination

  • Social Isolation


    MODI has published recent figures that show fourteen million Australian's are overweight or obese, more than five million Australians are obese with a BMI over 30.

     

    MODI have suggested that if weight gain continues at these levels by 2025 closed to 80% of all Australian adults and a third of all children will be overweight or obese.

     

    Obesity has become the single biggest threat to public health in Australia and it predicted that by the time children reach age 20, they will have a shorter life expectancy than other generations due to obesity.
